SUMMARY:Virtual Study Club — Unveiling Oral Health Heroes: Exploring Cultural Oral Habits and Combatting Oral Cancer
DESCRIPTION:OVERVIEW\nOral disease is not limited to resource-poor regions; it is alarmingly prevalent even in affluent societies. Now\, more than ever\, the role of oral health providers is paramount due to global trends and the concerning rise in oral cancer rates. As guardians of oral wellness\, these professionals possess the power to detect pre-cancerous or cancerous mucosal changes\, potentially saving lives. They stand as beacons of hope in a world in desperate need of difference makers and heroes. \nCOURSE\nThis course aims to enhance the awareness of oral health professionals regarding cultural and social oral habits\, such as chewing tobacco\, ‘betel nut’\, ‘khat’\, and ‘coca leaf’ or ‘kola nut’ usage. Understanding these habits is crucial in comprehending their adverse effects on oral health\, overall human wellness\, and global health. Furthermore\, it sheds light on how geographically distant populations\, with their unique practices\, can significantly impact local dental practices as they migrate worldwide. This knowledge transfer is vital in promoting holistic health\, emphasizing the interconnectedness of oral habits with oral cancer\, disease prevention\, and overall well-being.\nEngagement and Objectives: Participants will be actively engaged through a visually compelling presentation showcasing globally researched cultural oral habits\, including unique insights from Vietnam. Interactive discussions will address the oral health crisis within dental practices and inspire the exploration of preventive solutions. \nOBJECTIVES\n\nArticulate the benefits of oral cancer awareness for both clients and providers.\nDemonstrate proficiency in detecting oral lesions during patient examinations.\nAnalyze the implications of increased awareness of unique cultural risk habits worldwide.\n4Develop a professional development plan to continuously integrate global oral cancer awareness into daily practice.\n\nPRESENTER\nSherry Priebe DHP\, BDSC\, MSc\, graduated with a Diploma of Dental Hygiene from the University of Alberta\, a Bachelor of Dental Science and Masters in Science degrees from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She is published in the Vietnam Journal of Medicine and Pharmacy\, the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene\, the International Journal of Dental Hygiene\, Oral Hygiene\, and the Dental Health Journal in the UK. Sherry has been awarded for her cultural oral cancer study in Vietnam with the prestigious “World Dental Hygiene Award in Research” sponsored by the SUNSTAR Foundation for Oral Health Promotion in collaboration with the International Federation of Dental Hygienists and the International Journal of Dental Hygiene. She is a clinical dental hygienist\, researcher\, international keynote speaker\, educator and community oral health advocate. Sherry mentors and has led the University of British Columbia\, Canada/ Vietnam Dental Hygiene Service Learning Program for global collaboration. She presently serves on the BCCOHP Registration Committee and is instructor of the Dental Administrative Assistant Program at the Okanagan College in British Columbia. \nThe Virtual Study Club is a webinar-style presentation that provides essential skills and continuing education for dental hygienists in British Columbia.
